Standing Up for Transparency, Free Speech, and Melksham’s Future

As your local councillor for Melksham South, I’m committed to keeping you informed about the work I’m doing on your behalf. This past month has been eventful, challenging, and, above all, a reminder of why we need to stand up for our community’s values.

I’ve just released a video update to share what I’ve been working on, and I’d love for you to watch it. Here’s a quick look at what I cover:

Defending Free Speech and Accountability

One of the most troubling issues I’ve tackled recently is Wiltshire Council’s decision to censure Melksham News. This local newspaper has been a vital voice in our community, asking tough questions and holding decision-makers accountable. The council’s move to silence them is a direct attack on free speech, and I won’t stand for it.

I raised this issue at the Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee meeting, only to face personal attacks and have my opportunity to respond denied. This isn’t just about a newspaper—it’s about defending transparency and ensuring your voices are heard.

Supporting Our Local Youth

I’ve also been working to secure funding for the Canberra Youth Centre, which hosts incredible programs through 4Youth (South West). These services are a lifeline for young people in our community, and I’m determined to ensure they get the resources they need to thrive.

National Representation

At the National Children and Adults Services Conference in Liverpool, I represented our community on a national stage, challenging the government’s flawed bid-based funding system for local councils. It’s vital that Melksham and communities like ours receive the support we deserve without unnecessary bureaucracy.

Looking Ahead

There’s so much to be excited about and work toward. In the coming weeks, I’ll be attending key meetings to improve collaboration between councils, strengthen scrutiny within Wiltshire Council, and address issues like childcare sufficiency and the rollout of Family Hubs.

A Personal Note

While I’m heartbroken to miss this year’s Melksham Christmas Lights switch-on due to a training course in Warwick, I want to give a massive shout-out to the amazing volunteers who make this annual event possible. I can’t wait to see the display when I return!
