Working hard across the Melksham Community

Map showing location of new development

When Halam and Bloor first submitted the planning application for the development off Snowberry Lane which would see yet another 447 homes being built in Melksham I was very concerned but tried to work with the developer to see how our community could benefit from this additional construction.

I spent considerable time meeting with the developer’s agent, attending the planning committee meetings as the outline planning application was considered and trying to ensure that the concerns of local residents were considered.

All seemed good, with numerous positive messages being given by the developer and promises made about resident engagement and regular communications. Assurances were given about the new road being completed early and construction traffic not using Snowberry Lane.

In the event as soon as they received their outline planning consent the developer stopped talking to anyone and has gone silent. Promises about resident’s meetings to look at the final designs and layout of the new estate and proven to have been false and changes to the planned access of the estate show that ALL traffic will be using Snowberry Lane right up to the end of the development works.

As a result of this it is impossible for me to support this development any further without seeing a considerable change in the attitude and behaviour of the developer.

I will be calling the application in to Full Committee to ensure that any promises made by the developer in order to get councillors support will be fully and properly recorded.

I am also concerned that the drawings they have issues do not show the promised Community Centre, which they said they were going to build – this needs to be addressed to ensure the developer does not wiggle out of fulfilling this commitment.

Finally, I will be asking the committee to put in place strict and enforceable conditions regarding traffic movement. There is clear evidence that people’s homes have been severely impacted as a result of the heavy lorries using Snowberry Lane and I am very concerned for the safely of the historic Grade 2 Listed red brick wall running along the boundary of the development.
