Residents living near King Street Lorry Park are celebrating this evening following the unanimous decision of the Area Board members present to support the closure of King Street Lorry Park.

A report commissioned by Wiltshire Council, following a campaign led by councillor Jon Hubbard, recommended that King Street was unsuitable as a commercial lorry park and should be closed.

The report also looked at a number of alternative sites and recommended that a replacement Lorry Park could be sited at the Leekes Department Store site on the edge of the town.

Following the vote Area Board Chairman Cllr Jonathan Seed reported that the cabinet member responsible for Highways, which includes commercial lorry parking, has assured him that if the Area Board supported the report then he would follow its recommendations.

Once the Cabinet Member has formally signed off the outcome there will be a statutory period of consultation on both the closure of the existing site and the provision of the new site. There will also need to be legal agreements drawn up between the council and Leekes over the provision of the new facility. This is likely to take between 6 and 12 months to complete.

Speaking after the meeting Cllr Jon Hubbard said, “I am so happy for local residents tonight. This report fully vindicates all that they have been saying for the past 18 months and clearly shows the need for the lorry park to be moved.”
