Cllr Jon Hubbard Welcomes £11,000 Investment in Wiltshire 20mph Limits

Cllr Jon Hubbard has welcomed the recent announcement of an £11,000 investment aimed at implementing 20mph speed limits on dozens of roads across Chippenham. This initiative, which aims to enhance safety for local residents, is a significant step forward for the Chippenham community.

"I am delighted to see this crucial investment in Chippenham’s safety infrastructure," said Cllr Hubbard. "Here in Melksham, the previous introduction of 20mph speed limits on key roads such as Coronation Road and the roads surrounding Kenilworth Gardens had a positive effect. These measures are vital for ensuring the safety of our residents, particularly the more vulnerable members of our community, such as children and the elderly."

The £11,000 investment is part of a broader initiative to enhance road safety in Chippenham.

'20’s Plenty where people live' is a campaign advocating for 20mph speed limits in residential areas to improve safety and quality of life.

The adoption of 20mph speed limits has been widely recognized for its effectiveness in reducing accidents and improving community safety.

However, Cllr Hubbard expressed concerns about the length of time it takes for these important safety measures to be implemented. "While the investment is very much welcome, it is a shame that such crucial actions often take so long to materialise. Our residents deserve prompt and proactive measures to safeguard their wellbeing."

Cllr Hubbard stressed the need for further action in Melksham, highlighting Hazelwood Road as a priority area for the introduction of a 20mph speed limit. "I am committed to advocating for the extension of these safety measures to Hazelwood Road and other residential areas. '20’s Plenty where people live' should be more than a slogan; it should be our standard practice for urban residential streets."

The adoption of 20mph speed limits is part of a broader movement across England and Scotland, where many towns and cities have recognized the benefits of reduced speed limits in residential areas. In Wales, 20mph speed limits are now standard practice, setting an example that Cllr Hubbard believes Wiltshire and the rest of the country should follow.

"Implementing 20mph limits in residential areas is not just a matter of compliance; it's about ensuring a safer, more liveable environment for all. I urge Wiltshire Coucil to expedite these changes and prioritise the safety of our communities."
