So, the last month at Melksham Town Council has been somewhat surreal!
We have seen a group of councillors decide to throw the rule book out of the window and just do what they want, and the complete inability of the system to do anything to stop them.
Time will tell what the result of this will be financially for the Town Council, considerable I suspect, but I am certain that the negative and demoralising impact of their actions on the council’s staff team has been significant.
I don’t want to say too much as I think it is inevitable that various parts of this whole sorry escapade will end up in the courts and at tribunals but I will say that in 35 years of being actively involved in local politics I have never seen individuals behave in such an appalling manner.
As continue to move out of lockdown and additional small elements of normality start to reappear in our lives, I remain acutely aware of those for whom normality is still just a distant dream. I am also aware that for some, a return to the lives they were living before lockdown was imposed is not acceptable – having found some of these levels of need and social isolation in our community it is essential that we address that for the future.
I’m delighted to be part of the Age Friendly Melksham CIC team; we were at the fore-front of the Melksham Community Support scheme and have now appointed an Age Friendly Coordinator to help continue the scheme long into the future. There’s lots of exciting news to come from Age Friendly Melksham CIC as things come up to speed.
My latest Reporting Back newsletter was published this month and I am in the process of delivering a copy across my Division. If you haven’t received your copy you can download one here.
